Nothing like a bridge collapse to test your skills. As one of the first retained private investigators at the Interstate 35W bridge disaster, Heartland’s CEO, Paul Jaeb, realized how years heading Minnesota’s premier investigative firm made it possible for him to gather the facts under the most chaotic of conditions.
Paul founded Heartland Investigative Group in 1991. His leadership is guided by his wide-ranging experience in legal investigations, background profiling, corporate fraud investigations and security consulting. He has solved dozens of complex corporate fraud cases, conducted dozens of high-level security audits and advised the region’s leading executives on issues related to corporate security. Paul attended the University of Minnesota with a political science major. He’s a Chartered Fraud Investigator™ and is currently serving as National Director of the National Association of Legal Investigators. He’s an active member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals, and the American Society for Industrial Security. You may not know Ellis Armistead by name, but you know his work as one of the nation’s premiere investigators.
Ellis was retained within hours of the Columbine High School shootings. Three years before, he worked with the attorneys representing John and Patsy Ramsey after the death of their daughter, JonBenet. Other clients have included Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. Ellis has been recognized nationally as an expert witness in crime scene investigation and police procedure. He is now President of Heartland Investigative Group, managing our elite team of professional investigators with a level of knowledge and experience unsurpassed in our industry. Ellis holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado. He was a police officer for 18 years, before beginning his own private investigative firm in 1991. He has also served as the chief investigator of the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and as a deputy coroner for Routt County, CO. Law school teaches the letter of the law; business and politics drive home the reality of law in action. Jennifer Brown has both the legal education and real-world experience to get the job done right, specializing in investigating criminal cases and intellectual property matters.
Jennifer has a law degree and over 13 years of experience in the corporate, legal and public sector. She started as a Washington, D.C. staffer for a U.S. Senator and has gone on to work for software companies, database firms and some of the premier legal and investigative firms in the Rocky Mountain region. As one of Heartland’s senior investigators, she’s a specialist in pre-trial and litigation support for attorneys, including in-depth background checks, locating and interviewing witnesses and research. She’s also the author of numerous articles in respected publications detailing investigative issues of importance to other investigators and the business community. Jennifer holds a law degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law. Kevin Eckhoff understands people – and their motivations. He brings 19 years of experience in loss prevention and Retail security to Heartland. He has worked successfully and cooperatively with law enforcement officials and retail personnel to apprehend more than 1,000 shoplifters and has investigated individuals involved in organized crime rings, leading to their arrest. In addition, his extensive executive protection and surveillance experience adds leadership to our executive services team. Greg also runs Heartland’s uniformed security division. Our focus on retail and commercial accounts is well served by Greg’s experience in heading the security efforts of leading shopping centers and commercial office towers in the Twin Cities. Susan Kolar has spent 13 years at Heartland, honing her research skills, specializing in search and retrieval of public record information.
Susan is an authority in the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) and in NAIC verification reports for the insurance industry. Because of her knowledge and extraordinary efficiency, we rely on her as a managing investigator specializing in high-level background and due diligence investigations. Susan attended North Hennepin Community College. Her additional training includes several CLE programs relating to corporate structure and UCC Article 9. She’s a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Association and is currently serving as first vice-president at the local level. |

When it comes to interviewing witnesses, you want Colleen Nichols on your side.
That’s what comes of years of experience as a skilled FBI interrogator brought with sensitivity to the private sector. Colleen epitomizes perseverance in the face of difficult cases. She’s a former FBI Special Agent who specialized in major white-collar and organized crime. She helped lead the investigation into the Navy's Tailhook scandal. Over the years, she’s tackled such issues as fraud, theft, contract violations, regulation non-compliance, fugitives, extortion and kidnapping. As a Heartland Senior Investigator, she’s recognized as a relentless fact-finder, trusted for her expertise in providing testimony in trial proceedings. Colleen holds a bachelor of science from St. Cloud University. She’s a graduate of the FBI Academy and is a former FBI Certified polygraph examiner. |

Joining the Heartland team in 2008 in the corporate security division, Charlie Vashro’s talent was quickly recognized. Just months later, Charlie was assigned as an undercover operative in a corporate investigation. Other assignments in the Heartland Investigative Group have included surveillance, competitive intelligence and field investigations. Currently an Investigator specializing in asset searches, Charlie’s composed demeanor, perceptiveness and eye for the details enhance his proven track record.
Charlie is a member of the International Association for Asset Recovery and will soon become a Certified Specialist in Asset Recovery (CSAR). While serving in the United States Air Force, Charlie was an Electronic Warfare Technician. Charlie holds a BA in Criminal Justice with a minor in Communication from St. Cloud State University. He is currently working on his MBA at Augsburg College. |

Energetic and dedicated to her clients, you can always count on Jennifer Blazei for accurate, thorough work. Jennifer began her career at Heartland in 2007 in the corporate security division after working in Loss Prevention for a major national retailer. Now an Investigator with Heartland Investigative Group, she excels in a wide variety of assignments, including fingerprinting, background investigations, field work and covert investigations.
While working toward her BA in Criminology (with a minor in Psychology) at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Jennifer interned with the Duluth Police Department, focusing on financial criminal investigations.
