Heartland Investigative Group is pleased to announce the promotion of Tom Jaeb (a.k.a. Tom Steffens) to Vice President.

Tom began his career with Heartland Investigative Group in 1993 as a part time staff investigator. For the past five years he has been the firm’s Managing Investigator, guiding the day-to-day operations of the firm’s investigative staff in Minneapolis and Denver.

Tom has led many high profile and intense investigations in his tenure at Heartland and is a recognized authority on due diligence and asset profiling. In his new role, Tom will take an active role in strategic planning and business development.

Paul Jaeb, CEO of Heartland Investigative Group, has been elected National Director of the National Association of Legal Investigators.  NALI is a member driven organization comprised of 450 of the nation's leading private detectives and law firm investigators. Started in 1967, NALI has grown into the most respected organization of investigators in the United States.

Paul has been a member since 1998 and had just completed his fourth term as National Secretary.

"Paul is well respected for his vision and leadership skills, as demonstrated by his long tenure on the Executive Council," stated Ellis Armistead, Heartland's President and a former National Director himself. "I expect the membership to flourish under his guidance," he added.

Paul Jaeb founded Heartland Investigative Group in 1991 and has since grown it into the region's largest private investigative and specialty security firm. With offices in Minneapolis and Denver, the company has over 100 employees.  Jaeb is a Chartered Fraud Investigator.

It was 6 p.m. I was still in my office in downtown Minneapolis, in the middle of a conference call, when I heard sirens. A lot of sirens. By 6:05 p.m., my call was finished, but the sirens weren’t.

Private investigators may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of patent and trademark law, but investigators play a key role in the documentation and information gathering necessary to prosecute and defend intellectual property cases.

Though it's easy to conjure the Hollywood image of the incognito private eye snapping juicy pictures with a telephoto lens, most investigations are not that sexy. They're tedious, complex projects that sometimes take thousands of hours. And, as illustrated by a recent case at Hewlett Packard Co., where a shady probe prompted the chairman and general counsel to resign, investigations must be handled carefully.
